2007-2008 LOCAL STUDENTS RECEIVE BYRON CENTER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHOLARSHIPS
Four local high school students have been awarded the Byron Center Chamber of Commerce Scholarships. Katie Houseman, daughter of Jim and Ruth Houseman, and Daniel DeVries, son of Doug and Luann DeVries, are the Byron Center HS recipients. Kathryn Overbeek, daughter of David and Donna Overbeek, and Ashley Kooistra, daughter of Mark and Cindy Kooistra, are the South Christian HS recipients. Each of them will be recognized at the May 14th Chamber Membership Luncheon featuring Harold Voorhees. Katie will be obtaining her education major at a yet undecided college while Daniel will be attending Hope College seeking a degree in Ministry. Kathryn will be heading to Calvin College to the health care field to become a nurse and Ashley’s triple majors, Social Work, Bible and Theology, will take her to Kuyper College. Funds for the scholarships are raised from the chamber’s annual golf outing, which takes place each fall at Railside Golf Club.
Funds for the scholarships are raised from the chamber’s annual golf outing which takes place each fall at Railside Golf Club. Criteria for the scholarships include submitting a personal profile-explaining volunteer, work, school and community involvement and a narrative about future personal and professional goals. The top candidates are then interviewed. Although grade point average is a part, it is not the main emphasis, as consideration is given more for the well-rounded individual that is focused and demonstrates character and citizenship. Since the chamber is a community organization, this type of individual will benefit the community, whether it is the Byron Center community or another one these individuals choose to live in.
